Glass table tops do get broken, but luckily replacing the glass is not too difficult. It is generally advisable that the glass should be tempered. Tempered glass is heat-treated and is normally four to five times stronger than standard glass. It is also safer because if it is broken, it will shatter into oval-shaped pebbles, rather than sharp shards of glass.
Instructions
- 1
Measure the exact dimensions that the replacement glass needs to be, including the thickness. If the table is an odd shape, take a large piece of tracing paper and draw the exact shape.
2Choose an edge for the glass. This does not have to be the same as the original top that is being replaced. Beveled edges, pencil edges, waved edges and flat edges are all popular types of edging, but will generally cost more than just having a plain edge.
3Research the best place to buy the glass. An Internet search engine should find local options as well as Internet-based companies that are generally cheaper. A local option is better if you are not sure what glass you want. Take a piece of the broken glass, wrapped in newspaper, to the shop and the glass cutter should be able to match the exact glass.
