Paint the nursery walls before you bring any furniture or decorations into the room. Choose a color or color scheme that matches your chosen baby bedding. For example, if you choose a safari bedding that incorporates blues, greens and yellows, paint the walls one of those solid colors. You also could paint the walls two different colors. A third option is choosing a solid color, then using chalk to draw a mural on the wall and fill it in with acrylic paints.

Assemble your crib, following the manufactuer's instructions precisely. This will help ensure that the crib meets safety standards. If you are using a pre-owned crib, check with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to make sure the crib meets current safety standards. Place your baby bedding in your crib after it's assembled.

Position the crib in the room, but avoid placing it directly under a window or air vent. This will prevent drafts from flowing directly onto your baby. Add other furniture to the room according to your needs, such as a changing table, a dresser, a bookshelf, a toy box or a rocker. Arrange the furniture in the room as you see fit.

Add your finishing touches to the room, such as lamps, wall hangings, throw rugs and curtains. Stuffed animals and other toys can be placed around your room, but they should not be placed in your baby's crib because they could pose a suffocation hazard.
