While most people consider the foyer the space that gives a first impression of a home, the exterior entryway actually precedes it, giving a glimpse of what is on the inside. As you design a retreat for yourself and a space to receive family and friends, make a statement with your exterior dcor that says welcome and come inside. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Make the door the focal point. Paint it in a warm, rich color rather than a neutral color for more impact. Choose stains, as an alternative, in rich browns, oak or mahogany.
2Paint the trim around the front door in a vibrant, complementary color, rather than traditional white. Adding color to the trim gives the entry personality and provides a signature look for your home.
3Add planters on either side of the door. Use evergreens in the fall and winter and switch out to include blooming plants in the warmer months for additional color and interest.
4Install light fixtures, house numbers and a door knocker in a finish and style that coordinates with the style of the house.
5Add shutters to your windows, or update them if the color has begun to fade.
