Flour tortillas taste better and roll easier if they are steamed before being used. The combination of heat and moisture brings out the flavor while it softens the tortilla. Whether you want to make a batch of burritos or are setting up a taco bar with a soft taco option, steam the flour tortillas ahead of time for the best results. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
- 1
Place about 2 inches of water in the bottom of a large pot. Place a steamer basket or steamer insert into the bottom of the pot. Make sure the bottom of the steamer doesn't touch the surface of the water.
2Put the pot on the stove and turn the burner on medium heat. Allow the water to heat until it begins to boil.
3Place a stack of tortillas in the middle of the steamer basket. Place the lid on the pot.
4Allow the tortillas to heat and soften in the steam for 2 to 3 minutes, depending on how many tortillas you have in the stack.
5Turn off the burner. Remove the tortillas and place them between layers of kitchen towels to keep them warm and moist until you use them.
