Essentials for a Baby Nursery

Essentials for a Baby Nursery

Decorating your nursery as you get ready for a baby can be an extremely exciting time. Although paint colors and themes are fun to think about, it's important that you are prepared with all the items you and your baby will need. Think about how you will use your nursery when you begin setting it up. Does this Spark an idea?

Crib

Your baby will need a place to sleep, so begin by looking for a crib. There are many different kinds of cribs on the market today, so choose one that fits your design style. Many children sleep in their cribs until they are 2 or 3 years old, so purchase something that will be long-lasting. Also, make sure that the sides are high enough that a toddler won't be able to fall (or climb) out. Some cribs can be converted into toddler and even single beds at a later date. This piece often sets the furniture style for the nursery, so get a thorough overview of what's available before making a choice.

Changing Table

A quality changing table is another essential for a baby's room. Changing tables generally are tall enough so that you won't strain your back when bending over to change the baby many times each day. You often can find a changing table that matches your crib. Look for one that has drawers and compartments so that you can store diapers, lotions, wipes and other items you will need; have these in place when you bring the baby home. There are changing tables that can be used as dressers when your child is out of diapers. If your room is small, this is an option.

Chair

Your baby likely won't sleep through the night in the beginning, so place a chair in the nursery for you to sit in. A rocking chair or a glider are wise choices because the movement helps lull the baby back to sleep. Get something you like sitting in so that you will be comfortable during those late-night feedings. It's also a good idea to place a lamp with a low-wattage bulb or a nightlight near the chair. That way, you won't be stumbling around the nursery and won't have to turn on the overhead light.

Dresser

Babies grow very quickly, so they often have lots of clothes. Newborns are especially well-dressed because people often give clothing at baby showers. Purchase a dresser to help you keep the clothing organized. Choose a dresser that the child can use as it grows up. Organize the drawers by size, so that when your newborn outgrows something, you can find the next size in the drawer below.

Baby Monitor

Purchase a baby monitor so you can keep tabs on what is going on in the nursery without peeking in. Going in and out of the room will waken the baby, but a monitor will let you know if she is sleeping, moving about or crying. You can take the monitor with around the house during the day as well as use it at night. Some monitors have video as well as audio options so you can watch as well as hear your little one.
