Life is grand if you always have the right materials at the right times; in reality however, this is not always the case. A common place where materials may not always be exact is the kitchen table. You can deal with mismatched items such as plates, napkins or place mats, but items that are the wrong size can be more of a challenge. If you have a tablecloth that is not the appropriate size or shape for your table, you can do some simple things to make it work. Does this Spark an idea?
Size
If you have a round table and an oval table cloth, do not fret because it may work if the cloth is a large size. If the oval cloth is large enough to cover the entire table, you can easily use it as a substitute replacement for a round cloth. Check to see if the oval cloth will be a suitable replacement by placing it on your round table. If the edges of the table are covered, the cloth will be appropriate. Place the cloth on the center of the table so that the two longer sides are hanging at even lengths. Prevent the longer lengths from disturbing people sitting by them by pinning up the longer ends on the underside of the table. Use tape to pin up the ends of the oval cloth under a glass table or a couple tacks to pin up the undersides of the cloth on a wood table.
Multiple Cloths
An oval tablecloth can serve as a useful replacement for a round cloth if you have more than one. Choose coordinating oval cloths that are the same color or complementary colors. Place one cloth on the table, and make sure that the two ends of the cloth hang evenly. Place the second cloth on top of the first diagonally so that the two oval cloths form an X and entirely cover the round table. Make sure the ends of the second cloth are even on each side before covering the table.
Trim
Turn your oval tablecloth into a round tablecloth by trimming it to size. If you have an oval tablecloth that can completely cover your round table, cut it into a circular shape. Place your oval tablecloth upside down on your round table. Center it so that it covers the table with the two shorter and longer sides hanging evenly. Use a marker to draw a circle on the cloth. Cut the cloth along the line that you drew, flip it over and place it right-side up on your table.
