How to Design a Brainstorming Room

How to Design a Brainstorming Room

Brainstorming is a technique whereby the participants attempt to solve a problem through rapid-fire group suggestion and discussion. At the brainstorming stage, ideas don't have to be practical or even possibleit is an exercise in creative thinking, a way to approach questions from many different angles and perspectives. For brainstorming to be effective, the people involved must feel comfortable and free to contribute and explore any idea that pops into their heads. Designers want a good brainstorming room to maximize creativity while minimizing distractions.

Instructions

    1

Measure and record the dimensions of the room. Sketch the floor plan of the room to scale on the graph paper. Record the positions of electrical outlets, computer cables, telephone jacks, sinks and other utilities.

    2

Sketch the outline of a round table in the size you want in the center of your room design. Add chairs to the sketch, positioning them evenly around the table.

    3

Draw waist-high cabinets the length of the two walls flanking the door wall. Add extra electrical outlets along these walls if necessary to support office equipment, projectors, computers and other machinery. The cabinets should be deep enough to store office supplies, extra-large pads and rolls of paper and other such items. Leave ample room to walk between the cabinets and the pulled-out chairs.

    4

Sketch a pull-down projector screen at the top of the wall opposite the door and wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on the door wall.

    5

Use the paint chips to develop a color palette that will encourage creativity. Avoid blues and greens, which promote relaxation and serenity. Reds can inspire activity and alertness, yellow seems sunny and optimistic and orange is lively and vibrant.
