How to Repair a Furniture Finish Damaged By Steam

Steam can cause furniture finishes to discolor, peel and spot. Many people use humidifiers, especially in dry seasons to add moisture to their air. However, if the humidifier is placed to close to wood furniture you can slowly damage the integrity of the finish. Find a better area for your humidifier that is away from any wood. Inspect the existent of your wood furniture's damage to prepare for repairing the finish and restoring it back to its former condition. Does this Spark an idea?

    Remove everything on the piece of furniture that is not part of it. Wipe down the piece of furniture with a cloth to take off dust.

    Mix up a wood furniture cleaner. Combine 4 tbsp. of linseed oil with 2 tbsp. of gum turpentine. Add 1 gallon of water. Place your cloth in the mixture and wring out before wiping down.

    Wipe the entire piece of furniture dry. Place a small fan next to the furniture to get any small spots you may have missed.

    Use a wood finish repair formula like Restorz-It Wood Finish to fix your furniture's finish. Choose a color that matches the wood of your furniture. Spread on one thin coat of finish. Move your soft cloth in a figure eight to ensure you cover the entire surface. Allow it to dry before applying the second coat.

    Apply the second coat of wood finish to your furniture. Wipe down after a couple of hours.
