How to Build an Entry Bench

An entry bench offers a combination of benefits to the homeowner. Benches offer a seat, making the removal of boots and shoes a little easier, and then provide storage for some of these same materials. Build the bench to fit the size of the entry room. Choose materials appropriate for the room's dcor.

Instructions

    1

Cut 1-by-4-inch lumber to length you want. Fasten this framework together with 2-inch drywall or deck screws to form the interior frame.

    2

Cover the framework with 1/4- to 1/2-inch plywood. Cut the plywood to size to cover the internal frame. Position the plywood so the grain of all pieces runs the same direction. Use 1 1/4-inch drywall screws to fasten the plywood in place.

    3

Construct the lid of 3/4-inch plywood. The heavier plywood offers better support for the weight of a seated person. Glue 1-inch wood strips around the edge of the plywood to hide the edges of the plywood. Attach hinges to the back of the lid and the framework of the entry bench.

    4

Attach trim pieces to cover any seams between plywood pieces and around each panel of the bench. Use finish nails to hold the trim in place. Apply paint or stain to match existing dcor.
