Tablecloths protect your dining table while adding decoration to the area. Whether your dining room is formal or casual, you can find a tablecloth to fit your needs. If the round tablecloth options at your favorite home furnishings store are boring or don't fit your decor, get creative with the round table coverings. While you can sew your own round tablecloth, you can also customize tablecloths from the store without sewing skills.
Layering
A layered look adds depth and interest to the tabletop. A solid-colored round tablecloth serves as the base for this idea. A smaller tablecloth is layered on top of the base. You can choose another circle, a square or a runner. Layer two or three different tablecloths until you achieve a look you like. For more interest, make one of the tablecloths a patterned one and the others solid colors.
Embellished Tablecloth
A plain round tablecloth from the store gets a new look with simple embellishments. Dressing up a plain tablecloth is often more affordable than purchasing a more extravagant table cover. It also allows you to create the look you want if you can't find anything at the store. A beaded trim adds a decorative touch along the edge of the tablecloth. Sew it on or use fabric glue to hold the trim in place. Ribbon is a similar option. Fabric paint allows you to stencil or freehand a design on the fabric. Choose a design that complements the dining room decor.
Square Tablecloth
A square tablecloth can also work on a round table. You'll need to buy a larger square tablecloth so none of the tabletop shows. Square tablecloths between 67 and 72 inches work best on a 50 inch round table. A 60 inch round table works better with a square tablecloth between 85 and 87 inch. Center the square tablecloth on the table allowing the corners to drop down on the sides. You can also layer two square tablecloths of the same size, turning the top square so the corners land on the long sides of the bottom square.
Patchwork Tablecloth
You can use old scraps of fabric to create a custom round tablecloth. If the scraps are large enough, cut them into wedge shapes, sewing them together so the points meet in the middle. For smaller scraps, cut them into squares or rectangles, sewing them together to form a large square. You can either hem the edges and leave it as a square tablecloth or cut it into a circle. An easy way to cut the fabric into a circle is to cut a piece of string half the diameter of the desired tablecloth. Attach a washable fabric marker to one end. Have someone hold the other end in the middle as you move around the circle making a line with the marker. Don't forget to add an extra inch for the seam allowance.
